At 5: 1st: Stockbridge Cup 2nd: Hardwicke S. 3rd: Monmouth S., Pimlico S. Iroquois (1878–1899), was the first American-bred Thoroughbred race horse to win the prestigious Epsom Derby at Epsom Downs Racecourse, Epsom, Surrey, England. He then went on to win the St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster Racecourse. First U.S.bred/owned to win the English Derby. (1881). Sent to G.B. in 1879 with trainer Jacob Pincus of Baltimore, who introduced stopwatch into British racing. Returned to Lorillard's Rancocas Stud in New Jersey. 1886: purchased by William H. Jackson to stand at his Belle Meade Stud. Leading US Sire, 1892. Died September 17, 1899. Buried in an unknown location on the original Belle Meade Plantation grounds. | |
