The same horse as Thornton Arabian and Newton's Grey Arabian It is thought that his name originated from his "bloody shoulder" marks (that only occur in greys), except in his case the markings were on his buttocks. He was advertised for sale as part of the stud of William Ovington of Cowling, near Bedale, in 1727, and was said to have been purchased by John Crofts and Mr Hartley. He sired Grey Brocklesby, 3rd dam of high class and celebrated racehorse Gimcrack; Bay Bloody Buttocks, from which a large portion of Family 4 descends; Dairymaid, important in the line of Family 23; and an unnamed mare which is Foundation Mare of the short-lived Family 66. Bloody Buttocks died at Barforth about 1737 and was buried in the paddock near [Crofts] Partner and Greyhound. |
