| Also known as Pelham's Bay Barb Imported from France in 1698 by Henry Curwen of Workington, Cumbria, supposedly facilitated by a (non-existent) Count Byram, Master of the Horse to Louis XIV, he was probably brought over to England on Curwen's behalf by Sir William Ramsden, 2nd Baron of Byram in Yorkshire A highly influential stallion, sire of top class racemare Brocklesby Betty (winner of 4 King's Plates); successful stallion Alcock's Arabian (Champion Sire 1728); Sister 1 to Mixbury (dam of [Croft's] Partner, 4 times Champion Sire and sire of Tartar, sire of 8 times Champion Sire [King] Herod) and Sister to Soreheels (dam of [Devonshire] Blacklegs (Champion Sire 1746), of Crab (3 times Champion Sire), and of Snip, sire of 4 times Champion Sire Snap); the good sire Hip; Foundation Mares Families 36 and 64, the former grandam of King's Plate winner Engineer, sire of top class racehorse Mambrino; and other mares which bred on successfully Died in 1716. | |
