Probably given to Englebert Leedes by King William III, a 1706 entry in Lord Bristol's diary describing a horse he had bought at the stud of Anthony Leedes:- "a 2 year old bay colt gott by ye Barbe King William gave his father". Sire of 1) Bay Peg, dam of high class racehorse and significant sire Basto and of Fox, high class racehorse and Champion Sire 1731 and 1735; 2) Betty Percival, from which all of the prolific Family 6 except branch 6-a descends; 3) Cream Cheeks, from which Family 6-a descends, and grandam of Flying Childers (the greatest racehorse of the first half of the 18th century and Champion Sire 1730 and 1736) and Bartlet's Childers (Champion Sire 1742); 4) Bright Roan's Mare, 3rd of dam the high class racehorse Blaze, Champion Sire 1751; and 5) Leedes, Dyer's Dimple and Highland Laddies, all of which were successful stallions. The GSB says Young Bald Peg is by Leedes Arabian but some accounts say she is by Spanker. Given the respective foaling dates:- Spanker (1670c), LA (1680c) and YBP (1681c) it is more likely that YBP is by Spanker |
